Britons unaware of tax-efficient charity giving, says CAF

New research by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) has shown that British people who give money to charitable organisations are not making the most of tax efficient donations.

Over 30 per cent of the 1,307 UK adults questioned said that they did not know that they could give to charity tax-efficiently.

Gift Aid, the most popular way of making sure that charities are not taxed on the money they receive through donations, is only known by seven per cent of the respondents of CAF's survey.

The scheme allows charities to claim back 28 pence for every pound donated to them from the taxman.

Sheila Hooper, Director of Marketing at CAF, said, "By ensuring that their giving is made tax-effectively, whether by ticking the Gift Aid box on a donation form … or by donating through a CAF Charity Account, donors can be sure that their donations go further in helping the charities they want to support."

Financial advice website Unbiased.co.uk recently announced that Thursday (May 14th) was Tax Freedom Day, the date where British employees have earned enough to pay off all of this year's tax .
