Internet customers have been warned that they
may face hidden charges by
broadband providers for downloading more content than their
package allows them.
Consumer Choices has said that, with the launch of the
BBC's new high-definition
iPlayer,
broadband customers must be aware of how much they can
download within their monthly limits or under fair usage
policies.
The iPlayer application has received 387 million requests since its
launch, showing that
broadband users are downloading more, but they could face
charges or reduced connection if they do not make sure that they
are not exceeding any limits.
Michael Phillips, product director for BroadbandChoices.co.uk,
said: If consumers are regularly downloading
films and
music or uploading pictures to sites like Facebook, then they
can easily exceed the download limits or fall foul of the fair
usage policies of certain packages.
Those facing unexpected charges may have trouble paying them
according to recent research by
National Savings and
Investments, which found that one-third of British people are
not making
savings for emergencies.
