Quit to make savings, smokers told

Fri, 07 Mar 2008

Smokers could make all kinds of savings if they decide to kick the habit, it has been claimed.

According to Co-operative Insurance, the average British smoker could make savings of £2,000 simply by cutting out the cigarettes - that's a total of £121,000 in a lifetime.

Those who choose to quit smoking will also find that they make savings on life insurance, critical illness cover and income protection insurance, the insurance firm said.

Fiona Jackson, head of protection at Co-operative Insurance, said: "Giving up smoking can save people a significant amount of money as well as hopefully bringing a longer and better quality of life.

"Someone who is able to give up an addictive habit like smoking can certainly take charge of their own financial destiny and make adequate financial provisions for their future."

Last month, Stuart Budgen of Libra Financial Planning said consumers should search the entire life insurance market before deciding on which premium was most suitable for them.
