Savings to be found if you look, expert says

Reviewing your personal finances can make a "big difference" to the amount of money people pay out each year, according to one industry figure.

Nici Audhlam-Gardiner, head of mortgages at Abbey, said: "A mortgage is probably the biggest outgoing that some people have so they really should be spending the time to understand when it's coming up for renewal and then making sure that they're on the best rates that they can be."

She added that checking if you were on the best credit card deal available could also save you money.

Ms Audhlam Gardiner went on to say that car insurance was another area that people could save money and people should avoid taking the easy option of sticking with their current provider .

According to DebtHelpUK, 74 million credit cards have been issued in Britain.

It also found that over half of all the credit cards in Europe have been issued to British citizens.
