Personal debt worries one in three

Mon, 18 Feb 2008

Almost one in three people are concerned about their ability to manage debt, new research has found.

The study, conducted by MoneyExpert.com, also found that 27 per cent of people with debts have increased their borrowing in the last three months.

In its study, the firm found that 47 per cent of respondents owe money on credit cards, compared with 41 per cent three months ago, something it attributed to the Christmas spending.

The survey measures how well people feel they are dealing with personal debt, including mortgages, personal loans and credit cards.

It found that 33 per cent of people with mortgage, personal loans and credit cards were concerned or very concerned about their ability to keep on top of their debts.

Last week Steve Willey, head of credit cards at moneysupermarket.com said that consumers were getting a bad deal on credit card debt as most firms allocated peoples payments to the cheapest debts first.
