Money the greatest taboo

Fri, 12 Oct 2007

Money has become one of the least-talked about subjects in Britain, a new study has revealed.

Data collated by The Motley Fool indicates that 28 per cent of Britons would rather discuss politics than pounds, while many believe that cash talk is something that should be kept behind closed doors.

Indeed, two-thirds of the Britons surveyed by the firm believe that their financial circumstances are best kept quiet, although 20 per cent claimed to be perfectly happy to discuss career issues.

A further 20 per cent are likely to mention their religious beliefs, while 12 per cent would prefer to discuss their relationships than their bank accounts .

David Kuo, head of personal finance at Fool.co.uk, commented: "If we were more open with our partners, parents and friends about money then we'd realise that talking about our finances can help save us cash and ease the pressure of certain financial situations ."

CIFAS recently announced a government funding boost of £28 million to combat fraud and help keep people's money in their pockets and not those of crooks.
