Wendy van Den Hende, chief executive of the educational charity PFEG, said that the organisation's research indicated that children are saving their money so it is important to encourage and develop this kind of behaviour.
As they get older, children are more likely to experience peer pressure and may be "exposed" to the media's sales tactics, Ms Van Den Hende argued.
"What is needed is more structure and a much more coherent programme which can then be moved on as they move from primary school in to secondary school ," she remarked.
Research conducted by the PFEG revealed that 76 per cent of children between the ages of seven and 11 were putting some money aside in savings .
Additionally, one-third said that saving money was the best thing to do in order to buy something that they wanted.
