Financial services company declares carbon neutrality

Banking customers searching for a socially responsible financial services provider have been put on alert by news that Yorkshire Building Society now claims to be carbon neutral.

Explaining how it has slashed its carbon footprint, the financial services company has revealed that it recently switched energy tariffs so that it now uses a green electricity provider instead of a mainstream firm.

The green energy arrangement covers all of the 131 branches operated by Yorkshire Building Society around the UK.

And the organisation has also stepped up its efforts to offset CO2 emissions in recent months using a carbon credit scheme.

Mary Blackwell, environment manager at the financial services provider, has explained why the company decided to target carbon neutrality.

"As a mutual organisation, it is important for us to be a responsible corporate citizen not only in the communities where we operate but also to the wider environment," she said.

Recently, banking institution Barclays announced a new credit card that was expected to prove popular among eco-friendly consumers.

Among other features, specialist credit card division Barclaycard confirmed that it will donate half of all profits from the Breathe credit card to environmental causes around the world.
