Halifax alerts banking customers to money left in dormant accounts

Tue, 20 Feb 2007

Banking institution Halifax has announced details of a brand new campaign to remind people about money they may have languishing in dormant accounts.

According to the financial services provider, it currently holds approximately £44 million in more than 100,000 banking and specialist savings accounts that have not been accessed for more than 15 years.

While it is thought that three-quarters of these accounts have less than £100 waiting, this could potentially still be enough for some banking customers to make their next credit card or personal loan repayments.

As a result, the banking institution has announced that it will be conducting a multi-faceted public awareness campaign, encompassing mailings, national newspapers and a dedicated Halifax minisite.

"Our job is to reunite as many of our customers as is possible," commented Mike Regnier, head of savings at Halifax's owner HBOS.

"We are launching our reunification campaign today so that we have as much time as possible to get the cash back to its owners."

Banking customers who realise that they have money in dormant accounts may wish to transfer this money into an existing current account that offers a superior savings rate.
