Millions at risk of fraud, online banking service provider warns

Almost five million people across the UK could potentially be leaving themselves open to health insurance fraud by talking too openly about their health situation, according to the findings of a new study from an online banking specialist.

Research from online banking payments provider PayPal indicates that 11 per cent of the population - equivalent to 4.8 million people - share details about medical problems with total strangers.

Meanwhile, three million people talk about their latest love life crisis with people they do not know, the online banking payments group suggests.

Commenting on the findings, Cristina Hoole, of the online banking payments organisation, warned about the potential implications of saying too much.

"People need to be careful about giving away too much information such as financial or medical details to people they do not know, which can leave you open to unscrupulous people out there," she said.

Recently, Google launched its new online banking payments service Checkout in the UK, following rollout in the US last summer.

Enabling shoppers to pay securely for goods online, the system has been widely heralded as a rival to eBay's PayPal system.
