Biological research into the aging process may give some indication into what the future could hold for pensions in the UK.
Professor Tom Kirkwood, an expert at the University of Newcastle, is expected to advise the National Association of Pension Funds to be aware of the research in future decisions on policy.
"Biological research over the last 20 years has shown us that actually there is no strict biological program for ageing and no set upper limit for the length of human life." Professor Kirkwood will say.
"Until recently most forecasts have confidently predicted that life expectancy would be limited by the fixed nature of the aging process and an inbuilt maximum life span for all species."
Professor Kirkwood will also state that life expectancy will continue to rise in the UK, which will have "profound implications" on pensions.
Increased life expectancy is one of the reasons cited for the recent pensions crisis, which led to Adair Turner conducting The Pensions Report, in an attempt to assess what can be done to secure the future of Brits reaching retirement.
