Post Office Credit Card: Holiday prep costing 4.1bn

Wed, 26 Jul 2006

Holidaymakers are expected to spend around £120 each on preparations for their summer trip according to new research from Post Office Credit Card.

The survey of people heading off on their holidays discovered that some six million Brits are planning to spend more than £200 on shopping for items for their holiday, including new clothes, shoes, toiletries and travel guides, much of which could be put on their credit cards or paid for through taking out personal loans.

Women were shown to be the biggest spenders, with 78 per cent of those questioned planning to purchase new outfits for their holidays and more than half planning to buy new swimwear.

Gary Fitton, Head of Post Office Credit Card, said: "People want to make sure they look their best and have fun on holiday and for many this means a lot of preparation before they even board the flight – spending that perhaps isn't always realised in the total cost of a holiday."

Mr Fitton suggested that to help balance all the extra costs of the summer holidays, consumers should take advantage of some of the zero interest credit card offers currently available.

The Post Office Credit Card gives customers a six months interest free period on new purchases and allows card holders to transfer expensive items onto the card's loan facility which offers a lower rate of interest.
