People worry about getting old and being poor

Fri, 11 Nov 2005

Many Britons fear that their pensions will not be sufficient to get them through their old age.

Up to two thirds of the British public, worry about their income when they retire over the quality of local health services, or about how safe their neighbourhood is.

However there is a strong feeling about the fact that women should have pension rights of their own, according to an ICM poll.

Less than one in seven people, know about national insurance contributions and the fact that these contributions go towards how much you will receive by way of state pension when you retire. Many women may have missed out because they have not made enough contributions. Some may miss out simply because they take breaks from work when starting families. The effect of this is that they will not qualify for the basic state pension, unless they make up the contributions deficit themselves.

The poll showed that one third of those surveyed thought everyone received a full basic state pension. They were therefore shocked when told of the difference between a man and woman’s entitlement.
