Car insurance brokers call for tougher penalties

Car insurance brokers would like to see motorists without car insurance penalised, the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA)said.

Some 94 per cent of car insurance brokers said tougher penalties are needed for motorists who drive without car insurance.

More than half of the insurance brokers thought it would be suitable to seize such drivers' cars and nearly a third believed drivers without car insurance should be sent to jail.

Drivers without car insurance add an estimated average of £30 to the car insurance policies of honest drivers, said Graeme Trudgill, technical services manager at BIBA.

Saying that drivers without car insurance pose a threat to road safety, Mr Trudgill continued: "BIBA feels that the only way to deter offenders is to ensure that the punishment fits the crime and our industry believes that car seizures and prison sentences for repeat offenders are appropriate penalties which the government should introduce forthwith."

The survey further showed that car insurance brokers believe the new Motor Insurance Database (MID) needs more awareness, and blamed the fact that it is not up to date.

"The survey reveals some very interesting opinions and there is no doubt in the mind of the UK’s brokers that driving without insurance is a serious offence and also a dangerous problem that needs to be stopped," Mr Trudgill continued.

"The MID needs to be kept up to date to assist the police and our industry will continue to work together with the government to tackle this problem and to call for more severe penalties for offenders," he said.
