A website has been launched which aims to tackle the rising level of online fraud.
It will help businesses to train their staff in detecting identity theft activity.
The new service comes from the UK's fraud prevention service Cifas in partnership with Apacs and the British Bankers' Association (BBA).
At present, ID fraud is thought to be costing Britain more than £1.3 billion a year.
"This is a valuable industry initiative, providing firms with best practice guidance to help them stay one step ahead of the identity fraudster," said sector leader on financial crime for the Financial Services Authority (FSA), Philip Robinson.
Aimed at managers of organisations that might be vulnerable, the new service will help staff to spot ID fraud criminals.
There is an interactive e-learning section which includes a training portal. This helps staff who regularly have to check the identity of new or existing customers.
It gives examples of counterfeit documents and explains how to spot fake UK passports and driving licences.
The service also has a number of links so that employees can verify overseas identity documents.
